Insomnia & Sleep Issues
Getting an average of 7-9 hours of sleep each night is foundational for our physical and emotional health, however it's reported that 2 out of 3 Australian adults report having at least 1 sleep issue. A lack of quality sleep is linked to health conditions like stroke, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, heart disease and depression. For others, insomnia can lead to other psychological sleep disorders like Somniphobia (a fear or dread of sleep).

Our body clock governs the rhythms between awake and sleep factors within our body and the outside world. As the sun rises in the morning, we have a rise in cortisol levels which stimulates our conscious awareness and helps us to wake, these levels continue to rise through the day and cause an energy 'burn' which leads to a 'sleep pressure' as the afternoon progresses. As the sun starts to set, our melatonin levels start to rise and our cortisol levels decrease, helping us to feel calm and relaxed, preparing us for sleep. Through the night as we sleep, cortisol levels are at their lowest and melatonin at their highest helping us to go to sleep and stay asleep.

There are many factors that can impact sleep, some of these may be psychologically driven, whilst others may be behavioural, due to sleep hygiene or health factors. When working with sleep clients, we take a deep dive into all these factors to uncover potential route causes of the sleep disturbances. This may mean working in with your GP and getting a general check up and a testing panel to ensure no health issues are at play or investigating if regular medications may be impacting sleep.
